Logo Design, Corporate Identity and Branding
Sixmile Design, based in Mallow, Co. Cork, specialises in corporate identity and logo design. The gallery at the top of this page showcases just a sample of logos from the Sixmile Design portfolio.
A logo is a graphic or emblem commonly used by companies, organizations and even individuals to promote instant public recognition. Logos are either purely graphic symbols or icons or are composed of the name of the organization (a logotype). A logo is a crucial part of a company's identity. A unique, well designed logo will set a company apart from their competition while going as far as creating a 'personality' for the company and thus creating a positive, long term impression.
Corporate Identity encompasses the logo but is so much more. The identity can seen as a collection of visual elements, (eg. stationery, exhibition, website, marketing material etc.) which are used in various applications to promote the image of an organisation, company or even individual. The logo/identity is applied consistently across these applications promoting recognition in the public eye.
In creating the logo and corporate identity you are creating the 'brand'. In other words a brand is a product, service, or concept that is publicly distinguished (through design) from other products, services, or concepts so that it can be easily communicated and then marketed.
Case Study: Pixy Natural Skincare
The logo process usually starts with sketches based on feedback from the client. Inspiration can come from anywhere whether in the house or not. Its not uncommon to get ideas when out and about or from unexpected sources. For example I am also a watercolour artist. While painting one afternoon I realised the watercolour effect would look great incorporated into a logo. Sometime later when working up ideas for a logo for Pixy Skincare I began experimenting with a watercolour treatment within the logo. This resulted in the wings of the Pixy character being completed in watercolour, scanned into the computer, and then 'surgically' applied to the pixy girl in Photoshop (a popular image editing software package). The photo of the girl was the result of a photo shoot with a model from Cork. Ultimately two versions of the logo were created. One with orange wings and one with blue. These logos went on to be applied across numerous applications including stationery, labelling, packaging, leaflets, brochures and the website. In other words I went on to create the corporate identity and branding. More on this project can be found here.
